We Are What We Eat!

When thinking of the food we eat we tend to think of what it taste like, and what emotions it may bring; satisfaction, contentment, etc. Although, those are important factors to food, what we consume contains molecules that are far more vital to maintaining our well-being! There are four biological molecules that make up the human being; carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids. We'll only discuss the three that we consume:

Carbs are an essential part of our diet. Fruits, grains, and vegetables are all natural sources of carbs that can be readily converted into glucose (a simple sugar) to provide energy to the body. This is why incorporating carbs into the diet is important. They provide the body with the energy it needs and carry out cellular functions. This explains why we may feel sluggish when cutting carbs out of the diet. The body isn't getting the fuel it needs for it's main source of energy production.

Lipids, in the form of fats, play a key role in long term energy storage and insulation of the body. Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are essential to the body. Since we cannot produce them ourselves they need to be incorporated into the diet. Omega-3 fatty acids assist with brain function, and our growth and development. Fats and carbs suffer from a bad reputation, because it's believed that they cause weight gain, and yes in excess or fried amounts they can. Although, healthy unsaturated fats, like the omegas, and carbs in a balanced diet help the body carry out the functions it's MADE to do!

Proteins have the most diverse role within the body! Each of our cells contain thousands of different proteins that serve particular functions. Proteins can also function as enzymes or hormones. For example, they can serve as an enzyme in the process of digestion of food and as a hormone by signaling insulin to regulate blood sugar levels! Proteins are necessary in order for the body to seamlessly carry out a number of functions. Therefore, making sure the right amount is ingested is VERY important.

Adequate amounts of these three macromolecules help keep the body functioning as it should on a cellular level. Considering we are composed of cells we will reap the benefits of this, and our body will be running smoothly, like the unstoppable machine it is!
